I call this frog "Steppin' Out." Something I think we all would like to do these days after two years of cabin fever has taken it's toll. The reason I came to this name, well, partly it was the stance of the character. That's how it started, actually. He was walking. You see, when I start one of these sculptures, I may not even know quite what it is to be doing. I know maybe a few things, like, that it is going to be standing upright rather than sitting down, things like that. But the rest of it kind of comes to me. I decided this one was walking. I had made enough just standing still, or, still enough in a pose. Maybe I will let this one walk.
Immediately I thought, but walking? Is that good enough? That's kind of pedestrian. (Don't pardon the pun.) Then I thought, maybe he's truckin', like one of R. Crumb's characters. But then I thought, well, the feet aren't poking out far enough, the one foot forward isn't poking out enough, so it does not look like R. Crumb's trucking character. So then I thought, what do I do with this guy? But then it came to me, as I worked with him, that he was stepping out. You know, onto the town. Then, when I had bought some nice fabrics, I chose to wrap some around him. It was a nice, multi-colored polka dot fabric. And I thought, this is my frog guy stepping out on the town in his new outfit. So that's the kind of thing that goes through my mind as I'm working on a frog.
I happen to enjoy John Lennon's music. The song, I'm Stepping Out, made a lot of sense to me for this character, embodying a lot of the positive things about Lennon. He's show boating, in a boyish sort of way. He's stepping out. I like it.
Is resin dripping from his arms and legs? Yes, it is. I like it, won't always do it, but I like it.
